My 2010 Culinary Goals…

Posted by: Lys | Comments (0)

The other day on FoodBuzz, I was asked “Lys, how did you fare on your 2009 Culinary Goals?”   Well, I’m happy to say that I did better than expected.  I didn’t take that culinary class that I wanted (but will be taking them here in Philly).  I attended SOBE which was a blast.  Wish I could go this year but with the move, it’s going to be a stretch.  I moved Cooking In Stilettos over to WordPress which has been quite the learning experience!  I obtained some “Good China & Glassware” with some Simon Pearce and Vetri additions – love love love them.  Neiman Marcus in King of Prussia must be quite sick of me hovering over the Loubous and the Simon Pearce.  I have not learned how to make fresh pasta nor dog food for the pug, but there is always 2010.  All in all, I’m pretty pleased.

Now, in 2010, I’ve done some thinking and here’s a list of goals that I’m striving to achieve for this year.

First up, Diana over at The Chic Life has organized the “Eat In Month Challenge” and I’m going to attempt it – 31 days of cooking EVERYTHING at home – with one free pass to go out to a restaurant.  Granted my wallet is doing the happy dance at the moment and dreaming of a new pair of Loubous, but I am terrified.  Me – cook EVERY DAY – oy vey!  This should be interesting.  If you want to attempt this with me, well, go sign up!

Secondly, I’m vowing to get more involved with meeting with other culinary aficionados here in Philly.  It is my new city and why should I not put down roots finally, right?

I’m also carrying over the 2009 Goals of learning how to make fresh pasta – which means a trip to Fantes in Center City to look into a pasta machine.  Perhaps there is a cooking class on making fresh pasta over at Fosters or Sur La Table.  I’m also going to take more cooking classes here in Philly – and I might even look into Culinary School – I’m still on the fence with that idea though.

I’m also making a point to go to Reading Terminal Market – and soon.  Can you believe I have NEVER been there, even though I have been coming to Philly for over 20 years.

Now re: the dog food for the pug, let’s settle for making fresh dog treats and call it a day.  The little monster finally has the right food which has not made him sick.  However, when it comes to treats – that dog is a bottomless pit sometimes.  So I figure if I make him some decent treats, he won’t be apt to (a) steal people food (yeah right!); (b) snack on things he shouldn’t; or (3) not leave milkbones everywhere.

I’m going to forgo SOBE this year I think and I’m looking into possibly attending the New York City Food & Wine Festival in October.  It looks interesting.  Speaking of New York, I’m also planning on a few trips to the city and hopefully will meet with friends, both new and old and explore the Chelsea Market and a few other foodie haunts (and Dean & Deluca – love them!) plus see that famous shoe department in Saks with its own zip code.  I am, after all, the Stiletto Wench, right?

Another goal is to get a new DLSR camera and take better photos – not with a point and shoot.  BR is advising me on the *right* camera so this should hopefully be a goal I can achieve soon.

Finally, another goal I’ve decided to attempt is to make more things from scratch – including baking.  I have noticed quite a bit of preservatives in things and I have learned that Jenn of the Leftover Queen is rather wise.  Things are much better you make them yourself.  However, the coffee thing will take way more work.

Now – I think that’s a good list to get started, don’t you.  What are your goals for 2010, both culinary and personal?

A New and Improved Cooking in Stilettos…

Posted by: Lys | Comments (3)

Welcome one.  Welcome all.  Thought I would make a transition from Blogger to WordPress and it wasn’t a decision made lightly.  And, to move it by oneself with help to many tutorials on the web, countless blog queries and endless pestering of some friends and family to take a sneak peek, I feel like it’s a pretty good start.  Obviously there’s still work to be done but I didn’t want to post on Blogger knowing that I should be here.

So, stay tuned for some great recipes this weekend, fabulous products and fun discussions.

My 2009 Culinary Goals

Posted by: Lys | Comments (6)

I’m not a firm believer in “resolutions” as I detailed over at Just Because… However, I am a fan of “Goals” and decided that, in addition to making my “2009 Life Goals”, I was going to add some culinary goals to the mix. Of course, you know you’ll have a front row seat if I pass or fail. So, without further adieu, may I present some of my 2009 Culinary Goals

  • Attend the South Beach Food & Wine Festival. Granted, every year I hear about it and every year I whine about how I should have gone. Well, considering that I live in Florida, I bit the bullet last night and I bought a ticket for a day to at least check it out. Yes, it’s pricey but to see some of my fave chefs cook i.e. Michael Symon, Sunny Anderson, Ingrid Hoffman, Tyler Florence, Cat Cora, etc. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll go for the whole event. Either way, a day at South Beach – YAY!
  • Take a cooking class (or three) at a local cooking school here in Orlando. I found out about Truffles and Trifles through Chowhound and I’m intrigued to say the least. I know the Italian and Cajun ones are on my list. The Williams-Sonoma “demos” aren’t really “cooking classes” per se. While they are good, if I’m going to spend $40+ for a class, I’d rather it be hands on. I learn much better that way.
  • Learn to make fresh pasta. This means I have to do my research on Pasta Machines, find some fab pasta recipes and, for the love of all things Italiano, learn to NOT hit the boxed penne if I fail miserably.
  • With the pasta comes the pizza… Learn To Make My Own Pizza Dough…
  • Finally cave and getting some “good china and glassware.” Now, I have some great pieces courtesy of Southern Living, my family and various finds. I still lust after the Vietri line that I first saw on Everyday Italian years ago. So I’m going to work on actually finding pieces I adore at the best price. Seriously, my one wish would be to raid the Food Network “closet” (you know like the Vogue closet with all the goodies). I’d be up to my eyeballs in all things Le Creuset, Simon Pearce and Vetri. *sigh*
  • Learn to make dog food for the pug. The cat is pretty well established with her fave food, treats and whatnot. The pug is a very finicky eater so I’ll be researching more on this. Plus, I feel bad for the little guy who is getting sick all the time. Poor munchkin.
  • Finally, a blog culinary goal - Move this blog over to WordPress. Blogger and I are *ahem* cool but I want to really work on making Cooking In Stilettos the best it could be. So, make sure to keep http://www.cookinginstilettos.org in your bookmarks. I’m hoping to get this transitioned by the end of February – maybe sooner. Don’t quote me, though.

What’s on your culinary agenda for 2009?

I Haz A Button All Of My Very Own…

Posted by: Lys | Comments (3)

The Hotfessional (who I now luv more than my crack shoe savior, Ron and my Le Creuset pots) made me my very very first button.

Look to the right and you’ll see it all new and shiny like my copper Ruffoni pan! Somehow that just makes Cooking In Stilettos that much more special.

Thank you Ree!!!!!

I’m excited – the Food Network is premiering yet another new show. On April 6th – “Cooking For Real” with Sunny Anderson hits tvs everywhere.

Who’s Sunny Anderson you ask? Well, if you ever watched the show “Gotta Get It” where Food Network spotlighted a bunch of “must have” gadgets, she might look familiar. She was even on Emeril a couple years ago as a guest chef. To those in the hip hop world, she was on “THE” station – Hot97, where my boy K was a jock for some time. And she’s a testament to what happens if you just follow through with your dream.

Well, she’s also got a blog. And you can check it out here. Make sure to bookmark it and check it out. Also if you look to the sidebar, it’s on the blogroll.

I’m looking forward to the debut. Real food for real people!
