One of the best investments besides my knives that I have made for the kitchen has been the Le Creuset.  Le Creuset is functional, heats beautifully, cleans like a dream and, most importantly, looks gorgeous!  Now you know I have been obsessed with all things Caribbean as Teal is my fave color, however when Sur La Table debuted Le Creuset’s new Cassis and Lilac collections, my jaw dropped.  The Cassis color is this deep rich purple that reminds me of my great grandmother’s favorite chair.  The Lilac bakeware brings a sense of spring to one’s kitchen and is a complement to any other Le Creuset pieces you may have.

I have come to this important realization – that my Caribbean and Red Le Creuset pieces can co-exist with the Cassis and Lilac collections that need to be in my kitchen.  A bonus realization – the braiser definitely is coming home with me!

Lately, I’ve seen more focus on rustic cooking and one dish from Italy that has my attention is “Brick Chicken” – that is chicken roasted under a brick rendering the skin crispy while the meat is succulent and moist.  Tyler Florence spotlighted it the other day on Tyler’s Ultimate, however, as I’m allergic to all things Home Depot (want to send me on a panic attack – send me there.  Trust – I walk in and walk out ASAP.  Too much for me to handle), buying a brick is just not going to happen.   However, a mattone is kind of a unitasker.  To buy or not to buy was the question. 

About a year or so ago while in Philly, I saw the Mattone in Sur La Table.  I desperately wanted to try it but I put it back.  On a couple return trips, I would fondle but put it back not only for the unitasker issue but also because it was so heavy it would send my luggage into overdrive.

The Break-Up: Sur La Table – It’s Over.

I rarely, RARELY, ever speak ill of what I regard as my cooking Mecca – that being Sur La Table. However, after what I went through last night, Sur La Table and I are breaking up.

I’ve disclosed before that when I get their catalogs, I pore over it like it’s the latest issue of Vogue. I bought my Global knives there. I first fell in love with (and later took home) my Caribbean Le Creuset pieces via Sur La Table. Sur La Table has been my “online go to spots” for research here for Cooking in Stilettos. Not to mention, the price difference between here and Williams Sonoma is astronomical. Sadly, the nearest Sur La Table is 3 hours away. They haven’t built one in Orlando yet (and, last I heard, it will be QUITE some time). And, when I travel, I always research where Sur La Table is and if I have time to go, often leaving room in the suitcase to store the goodies I find. The Sur La Table in New Jersey knows me well.

I placed a substantial order on their site yesterday, namely being the Lotus Sanitizing System that I’ve talked about here before, a marble pastry board that I needed this weekend, a donut cutter that Diana @ The Chic Life recommended some great deals on baking sheets and the apron I’ve been lusting after. I would have added more but I thought “eeeh – I still have the remainder of the gift card that I need to use at WS. I’ll perhaps use it on the Breville Cordless Blender I’ve been eyeing.”

The key factor to this drama is that I needed the pastry board for this weekend. See, the Marble Pastry board at Williams Sonoma is $129.00. I was hesitant to buy it but figured I had to. You can’t find a good marble pastry board here in OTown at a decent price. At Sur La Table it was on sale for $32. That’s a HUGE difference. So, knowing that, I figured I’d upgrade to overnight shipping and have it sent to the 9to5. It was an extra $25 but I felt it was worth it with what I would have spent at Williams Sonoma. I couldn’t ship it to my house because we’re having problems at our apartment complex with deliveries – namely UPS leaves the stuff on the truck, marks it delivered and we don’t get it until 2 – 3 days after. We’ve complained and UPS gives everyone the same excuse, “We’re sorry – it got mixed up with the Disney packages”. I’d rather not have ANYTHING shipped there if I can avoid it.

My gut instinct, however, kept bugging me last night and I called Sur La Table to check on the status of the order. I normally would get a tracking number by evening. Williams Sonoma does it. Barnes & Noble does it. Other retailers do it. It was now around 8 and I had received nada, nil, nothing.

By chance, I encountered Charmaine in the call center. All started off okay until she told me “Well, it should be shipped tomorrow.” Wait a minute – overnight means OVERNIGHT! Then she tells me that their overnight is, technically, two days. Well considering that my shipping is about $50, we need to rectify that mess quickly – as in cancel. She told me she couldn’t do ANYTHING and that I’d have to do it at 8:00 but there was the chance that the order could be filled and shipped by that time. To make the situation every worse, I found that the woman was rude, condescending and just pissed me the hell off.

Yes, I flipped into cable cop mode whereby I told her to let me speak and then I’ll let her speak. Do. Not. Interrupt. Me. She goes ‘Well you interrupted me!’ Wait another flippin’ minute – I paused, recounted the conversation in my head, could not not recall one interruption, refused to put up with her attitude and shut. her. down. The next thing she heard was “Charmaine, I want to speak to your Supervisor – NOW“.

Her supervisor, Theresa, and I had a “Come to Jesus” talk. It was more than the shipping confusion (a normal definition of overnight vs. their definition) or the need for this pastry board. The reason for the “The Break Up” is and forever will be the crappy customer service exhibited by Charmaine. Theresa assured me that she would address Charmaine’s issues immediately and that she would do what she could to cancel my order. However, to be safe, I should call Customer Service in the morning. She did everything she could on her end to try to help the situation which, thanks to Charmaine, escalated well beyond what should have been done. She was beyond pleasant – DID NOT INTERRUPT ME and understood that I seriously was seeing red. While I can get cranky, this was worse than when I shut someone’s cable off and they called me the “C” word. (They were stealing cable – where does that make me the bad guy for doing my job, right?)

This morning, I had a quick break from the daily duties where I could give Sur La Table a quick call to make sure the order was cancelled. I wanted that money refunded stat. I resigned myself to the fact that instead of using that Williams Sonoma gift card for a portion of the Breville blender or the Emile Henry Pie Plate or other goodies I wanted, I HAD to spend it on that pastry board and then take a hit for an additional $100.

Well, Sur La Table’s rep, Jessica, answered the phone and I told her to cancel the order. She told me I’d receive it on Monday and I told her “No. Just cancel the order.” She talked to her supervisor and again asked what she should do. Again, I had to tell her to CANCEL IT! She told me that if it had been placed at 1:00 EST it would have been sent but I placed it around 3:00 EST. OK – where does it say that on the website? It doesn’t. While I admit that I am blond, I do tend to notice these things and, if I had seen it, I wouldn’t have placed the order. Plain and simple and Sur La Table and I would have been fine. The continued lack of following a clear and explicit command was astounding. What part of CANCEL THE ORDER does Sur La Table not get? No part of explanation by a CSR on their part can override Charmaine’s actions. That’s the main issue.

Long story short, due to Charmaine’s actions, I just can’t support Sur La Table anymore. So, it’s my decision that until further notice, I’m not going to recommend them, feature their products here on Cooking in Stilettos, give them any link love on either of my sites and their catalogs will go unopened. The two new Sur La Table cookbooks I was planning to buy will not be purchased. I will buy only from other online retailers i.e. Fantes, Cooking.com, Chefs, Jacobs Kitchen, Dean & Deluca, etc. I will purchase that Lotus System through Chefs. I will send customers locally to Le Gourmet Chef, the Premier Outlets, Crate & Barrel and Williams-Sonoma. What was Sur La Table’s loss is now other culinary retailers’ gain.

Sur La Table not only lost a substantial sale, but a long time fan and customer. Quite simply, I am heartbroken because they truly were my favorite store.

I am a Facebook junkie, I know. That’s not up for debate. Anywhoo – last night, Pretty Random Thoughts‘ Lesli posted something about getting a wreath that really wasn’t her favorite. So, when I was perusing around Sur La Table looking for that hostess apron I adore along with a couple other things, I saw that they had some wreaths on sale.

My favorite above all is the Holiday Wreath with Copper Molds. It’s on sale and is just so festive. I adore all things copper so you combine that with something very “holiday”, it’s on.

When I saw this, I figured it was bookmark worthy. I’ve been feeling a bit of the cooking “block” (much like writer’s block) lately, but I figured it’s due to a few things I have going on in the day to day.

We’ll see if I have some creative bursts of inspiration.

Yay or Nay: Williams Sonoma Egg Poacher

I recently got an email that Williams Sonoma is having a sale (and that screeching you hear is my wallet screaming in frustration as Sur La Table is ALSO having a sale).

One of the things I’m debating is this 6 Cup Egg Poacher.

It’s normally $59.99 and on sale for $34.99. I’m going to do some comparison shopping before I check out but that is a pretty decent deal, no?

I sometimes think I have the Bill Cosby disease, namely where on the Cosby Show, Mr. Cosby had gadgets galore in his kitchen. See, while y’all know I love my pots and pans – I also tend to gravitate to the electronics department of Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma when I’m curious about new and exciting things for the kitchen.

One of the first things I bought when I started my adventures in culinary mishaps was an immersion blender. While it works great and does its job, I hate the cord, it’s a pain to clean, it’s pretty beat up and I’ve had it for about 5 years now. Do I use it all the time – no, mostly because I hate that cord. It always gets in the way.

So, when I encountered the Breville Cordless Immersion Blender, I stood there in shock and awe. Sure, I spent about $30.00 for the original immersion blender I have, but $99.95 for this? That’s a pair of shoes for me or a shiny new LC pot at the LC Outlet. What is a girl to do?

This is on my wishlist and, while I’m looking at it fondly, I’m still trying to justify the cost of an immersion blender when I already have one. Now if I made more things that required the use of one, I might be able to tell my inner PF demon to back off, but for now I’ll keep fondling whenever I see it and, perhaps, one day it will be on the counter and not in a cabinet like many of my gadgets.

Any ideas how a gal can justify forgoing a new pair of stilettos for this beauty?

Philly Recap: 9th Street Italian Market

During my trip to Philly a couple weeks ago, I took Saturday morning for myself and did something I always wanted to do – wander the Italian Market during one of the busiest days.

Here in Orlando, our access to fresh spices, etc. is a bit limited and we can get spices from the Fresh Market but it’s not the same. So that Saturday morning, I went and wandered up and down 9th street. My main object of interest was the Spice stores. I had seen Ms. Patti Labell profile them on her show Livin’ It Up and thought “I Must Must Must Go”. So, I parked the rental car on a side street, popped on my flats and went walking.

First thing I encountered: Fantes. Yes – THE Fantes. Well, one of them anywayz. I go to the website often but like my first experience with Sur La Table, I told the people – let me fondle, let me wander – I’ll find you for help – trust. And wander I did. Meowmix joked that only I could go to Philly and get excited over a pasta colander instead of shoes. I know, some of you are in shock but ever since I saw Nigella use one I thought “Wow – how handy”. And, it’s not found in Orlando. I found some rosette forms, fondled some pots, bought some gratin dishes (which the cranky salesgal didn’t wrap very well and wound up breaking – grrr) and a few other things. I was hoping to get my Global Cheese knife but they didn’t have it and it would have to be specially ordered. I’ll just get it online.

Bonus: inside Fantes, they had a little coffee shop and some cafe au lait later I was back out and wandering the Italian Market again on the hunt for the spices shops.

I found two spice shops, both of which were amazing. One of which was the Spice Corner and the other was the Italian Market Spice Company (their website isn’t up yet). There I bought so many spices my car smelled like a tangine. I bought curry, Nigella seeds, tarragon, rosemary, ancho chile powder, tumeric, and a host of other stuff that was so fragrant and fresh. I even found Pumpkin Spice Coffee.

I wandered in some of the shops on the side, marveled at the fresh produce lining the streets and just breathed in the sights and smells. I went into one of the butcher shops, Orlando’s Meats (hey – it said Orlando – I had to pay homage, no?). It was in there that I spied The Philadelphia Italian Market Cookbook for sale. This was something I could take home with no problem from the airline. Also, before you shoot me for going to the butcher, here in Orlando we have Publix, Fresh Market and yeah – that’s about it. *sigh* You don’t know how I wanted to shake some of the people whining in line to say “Be thankful you have such a resource. You’d be eating some funky chicken if you were in Orlando” (Have you EVER had Winn Dixie poultry :::shudder:::) The manager of the butcher shop gave me an autographed copy that I’ve been reading with amazement. For an Irish/Indian gal, I swear I must have been Italian in another lifetime because it just is a fascinating read.

After browsing some other shops, I left, vowing to go back again. And this time – I’ll bring a list and ship everything home via mail.
