On April 1, 2010  Philly is getting a visit from Food Network’s resident everyday Italian, Giada de Laurentiis.  Starting at 1:00 p.m., Giada de Laurentiis is coming to Williams Sonoma in King of Prussia to sign copies of her new cookbook, Giada At Home: Family Recipes from Italy & California.

I have attended book signings here before and Williams Sonoma’s corporate management should be thrilled because the KOP Williams Sonoma runs a great event.  So, if you plan on attending, you better hurry up and reserve your copy of the new cookbook because space is limited.

Williams Sonoma is located at 160 North Gulph Road, King of Prussia, phone number is 610-265-5970.

Make sure to tell them that Cooking In Stilettos sent you!

Question to the Readers: Covet Worthy Items

Posted by: Lys | Comments (1)

Weekly question time deals with Covet Worthy Items.  No, not shoes -  at least for today – but what big purchase product has you going “I MUST have that” while you are plotting any creative accounting to either save up for or re-allocating funds so that you can add it to your kitchen arsenal.

For me is the brand new Cuisinart Elite Die-Cast 16-Cup Food Processor

Do I *need* it – no, I have one that works pretty daggone good.

Do I WANT it with all the bells and whistles – oh heck yes.

All in due time.

What’s on YOUR list?

I have to say I don’t go crazy decorating for the holidays – but when I saw this Nest With Chocolate Truffled Eggs from Williams Sonoma, I thought how gorgeous it was and how perfect it would look as a dining room table centerpiece.  I’m afraid to see what other Easter goodies that the Williams Sonoma catalog will feature. Thankfully, for my wallet’s sake, it hasn’t arrived in the mailbox just yet.

I know, I know – behave Lys.

Great news – Williams Sonoma is making the holidays easier on the wallet – namely when it comes to all things Le Creuset and Calphalon.  They are offering 20% off all Le Creuset and Calphalon for five days only.  Hurry because it expires on December 13th.

Happy Shopping!

Last month, I was able to attend the Martha Stewart event at the King of Prussia Williams-Sonoma.  First of all, can I say there were over 300 people waiting in line to meet the one and only Martha Stewart to get their cookbook signed.  It was craziness to say the least.  Creative Catering replicated some of the dishes for the eager crowd and, in my opinion, they did a phenomenal job.  Plus, Cupcakes Gourmet replicated the Coconut Cupcakes for everyone and those were delish!  As she settles for nothing less than perfect, you know the food just HAD to be good.

While we were waiting in the endless line, I took a few minutes to start leafing through her latest book, Martha Stewart’s Dinner at Home: 52 Quick Meals to Cook for Family and Friends,  and found that it would be PERFECT for the home cook.   The recipes were organized by seasons and full menus were put together.  Some of the standouts that have been bookmarked for later use are the Mexican Corn Cakes, Pancetta Cheeseburgers,  Fontina and Herb Flatbread and the Caramel Pudding.  The pictures draw you in and the recipes are so well laid out that if you just follow them to the letter, you won’t have one problem.   I felt it was worth every penny, in my opinion.

Check out some pics from the event…

Now, I have to be honest – the Williams Sonoma people were AMAZING.  However, there were rules – no pictures, no personalization, nada – don’t even try it.  Somehow you just knew to expect that from Ms. Stewart.  I happened to be towards the end so I’m sure she was tired but we’re thankful she stopped by the Philly area.

Tomorrow:  I attempt my first Martha Stewart recipe ever – will I fail or can I actually pull it off.  Stay tuned…

Lately, I’ve seen more focus on rustic cooking and one dish from Italy that has my attention is “Brick Chicken” – that is chicken roasted under a brick rendering the skin crispy while the meat is succulent and moist.  Tyler Florence spotlighted it the other day on Tyler’s Ultimate, however, as I’m allergic to all things Home Depot (want to send me on a panic attack – send me there.  Trust – I walk in and walk out ASAP.  Too much for me to handle), buying a brick is just not going to happen.   However, a mattone is kind of a unitasker.  To buy or not to buy was the question.

About a year or so ago while in Philly, I saw the Mattone in Sur La Table.  I desperately wanted to try it but I put it back.  On a couple return trips, I would fondle but put it back not only for the unitasker issue but also because it was so heavy it would send my luggage into overdrive.

Recently, while perusing Williams Sonoma’s latest offerings, I noticed that they too had a Mattone

And, finally – NapaStyle has a Mattone in my favorite color – teal.

You know what I always say – if something crosses your path repeatedly, pay attention.  Well, guess what – I’m listening…

Gift Idea: Penguin Sparkling Water Maker…

Posted by: Lys | Comments (3)

penguinsparklingwatermakerWhile doing a little retail R&R this weekend, you know this gal HAD to go to Williams Sonoma, right?  First of all, if you have the chance to go on a weekend, go.  The smells in there were amazing!  They did some demos on Sunday and were showing their Meyer Lemon Quick Bread but I digress.

They had on display the Penguin Sparkling Water Maker which is essentially a water carbonator.  I have to say, I’m a fan of the occasional bubbly water and soda.  Not to mention, sparkling water is a must when I have cocktail parties.  So, would I use this – probably more than I care to admit.  I’ve been quite paranoid lately with all that I’ve read online re: soda, additives, etc. and to think that I could possibly make my own citrus libation and know exactly what goes in it – SOLD.

From the Williams Sonoma website:

Adding effervescence to holiday festivities, this eco-friendly soda charger quickly transforms ordinary tap water into fresh sparkling water. Enjoy it on its own or as the base for cocktails or homemade sodas. It’s fun and easy to use: Simply fill the reusable glass carafe with water, insert it into the Penguin and press the carbonating “beak.” You can customize carbonation so each batch has just the right amount of fizz. Freshly charged seltzer water is a green alternative to its store-bought counterparts. Conserving energy and resources, it eliminates the need for plastic bottles – along with the environmental impacts associated with shipping and shopping for bottled water – and no batteries or electricity are required.

While the price is a bit steep *cough cough*  I wouldn’t be adverse to it if it saves money and energy in the long run.  Paying it forward, one glass at a time.

In November, I fell in love – with short ribs – specifically, the Bourbon Blue‘s Braised Short Ribs.

However, I couldn’t necessarily stalk pester their chef for the recipe so this gal had to improvise. And by improvise, I mean review every little recipe I could get my hands on that might be *the one*.

Well, my friends, I think I found one that is striking similar and, even better, I was able to finally use that lovely crock pot that only sees the counter every few months when I have to make those fabulous meatballs for a soiree.

Trust me when I say that while it make take some time, the end result is WELL worth it. I served it over some Asiago polenta (the cupboard was sans Parmesan – I KNOW – bad, Lys, bad!) and the leftovers were even better the next day. I halved the recipe because, unless I was feeding my friends for a week, this wouldn’t work and I’d have short ribs for breakfast lunch and dinner. Now that I think about it – really, what’s so bad about that…

Williams-Sonoma Braised Short Ribs

Recipe courtesy of Williams-Sonoma

Ingredients:

  • 4 lb. bone-in beef short ribs
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbs. olive oil, plus more as needed
  • 2 large yellow onions, chopped
  • 3 large carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 4 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 bottle (750ml) full-bodied red wine
  • 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste
  • 3 fresh thyme sprigs
  • 2 fresh rosemary sprigs
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 to 2 cups beef stock

Directions:

  1. Season the short ribs with salt and pepper.
  2. Spread the flour out on a rimmed baking sheet.
  3. Dredge the ribs in the flour, shaking off the excess.
  4. In a Dutch oven over medium-high heat, warm the 3 Tbs. olive oil until nearly smoking.
  5. Working in batches, brown the ribs on all sides, about 10 minutes total.
  6. Transfer to a slow cooker.
  7. Add more oil to the Dutch oven if needed.
  8. Reduce the heat to medium, add the onions, carrots and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 10 minutes.
  9. Transfer to the slow cooker.
  10. Add the wine to the Dutch oven and cook, stirring to scrape up the browned bits.
  11. Add the tomato paste, thyme, rosemary and bay leaf, mashing any large chunks of tomato paste with a spoon.
  12. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook until thickened and reduced by half, 8 to 10 minutes.
  13. Add the wine mixture to the slow cooker along with enough stock to come halfway up the sides of the ribs.
  14. Cover and cook on high for 6 hours according to the manufacturer’s instructions, stirring occasionally.
  15. Skim the fat off the sauce.
  16. Discard the herb sprigs and bay leaf.
  17. Transfer the ribs, carrots and sauce to shallow bowls or plates and serve immediately.

Serves 6.
